Century-Old Log Inn Was Guidebook Author's Playhouse | |
Providence, RI, 5/3/04—During World War II, while Old Faithful Inn's guests were out for the day, the transportation agent's two small daughters played hide-and-seek in the corridors of Yellowstone National Park's premier lodging. As the namesake inn of Old Faithful Geyser celebrates its one hundredth birthday this spring, author Janet Chapple shares her memories about her unforgettable "playhouse" and about spending summers within view of the geyser. The story appears on a page of her Yellowstone guidebook's companion Web site: www.yellowstonetreasures.com/old_faithful_inn.htm. Along with reminiscences, the article provides pictures of the inn and information about the centennial celebrations. On three weekends, May 7-9, June 19-20, and August 28-29, the National Park Service and park concessionaire Xanterra will commemorate the opening of Old Faithful Inn in 1904. Guests will participate in historical presentations, a stagecoach tour, lectures, and other events during the May weekend. The popular inn now opens every year in May, but the first day it was open in 1904 was June first. With the building of the first-class inn, visitors to Upper Geyser Basin finally had comfortable overnight accommodations. This summer's Yellowstone visitors to the inn and the park will find their trips enhanced by Chapple's award-winning guide, Yellowstone Treasures: The Traveler's Companion to the National Park. The book won the Gold Award for Travel Guides in ForeWord Magazine's 2002 Book of the Year Awards and is available at online and local bookstores and also in Yellowstone visitor centers and gift shops. Previous visitors have called it "indispensable," "a gold mine of information," and "entertainment, education, and expanded map" rolled into one. The book's companion Web site gives further tips and timely articles that answer travelers' questions.
