Autumn is quiet time for Yellowstone wolf watchers

Here is a wonderful wolf report from last month by one of our best observers of Yellowstone wolf behavior, Kathie Lynch:

I’ve been meaning to send this on ever since I returned from the park. While there I had made my own futile effort to see wolves in Lamar Valley. It was early September, and I woke up before first light. I could even do a bit of star-gazing as I headed out from Mammoth. I loved watching the stars gradually fade and the light increase as I drove east. I had the road entirely to myself until I got to Tower-Roosevelt Junction—unless you count the jack rabbit and the red fox that both ran away as I came along.
I parked in several of the turnouts between Soda Butte and the western end of the valley—called Fishermen Turnout by wolf watchers. But no wolves were stirring. Had Katie’s report come out a little sooner, I would have known why.
