The Guidebook, First Edition : Updates and Errata

Updates and Errata

Here are the corrections for the first edition of Yellowstone Treasures.

p. 13: In the "Less Well-Known Places" section, Firehole River behind Old Faithful Geyser is described on p. 78, not p. 178.
p. 47 UPDATE: The two-room bathhouse at Queen's Laundry, begun in 1881, was added in 2001 to the National Register of Historic Places. The waters of the hot spring have since surrounded the bathhouse, but its walls are still intact. This brings to seven the listed sites in Yellowstone.
p. 76: Geyser Route Two begins on page 92.
p. 147: One of the paragraphs about Cody, Wyoming, currently reads "The Buffalo Bill Historical Center houses four fine museums. . . . A natural history museum is planned for early in the 21st century." UPDATE: The fifth museum, the Draper Museum of Natural History, opened in June 2002 and is well worth a visit on your way in or out of the East Entrance.
pp. 214-18 UPDATE: Due to major construction on about eight miles of the road from Canyon Junction towards Tower-Roosevelt, the sights described in the road log from mile 10.3 to mile 18.3 will not be accessible during the 2004 summer season and for a couple more years. It will not be possible to view the Mt. Washburn North Side Panorama, depicted on pp. 214-15. Also, the Dunraven Pass hike, recommended in the book on p. 359 for its wildflowers, will be out of reach. Access to the Mt. Washburn Trail may still be gained from the Chittenden Road if you drive from Tower-Roosevelt. On p. 218, the "slightly shorter and more pleasant trail" to Cascade Lake, described at mile 0.5 from Canyon, will be out of reach.
p. 280 UPDATE: A spur road now leads to parking for Artists' Paintpots, so the walk to see the features there is now about 0.8 mi or 1.3 km.
pp. 295 and 382: New research shows that the caldera boundary is slightly different from what official park maps, the guidebook maps on pages 295 and 382, and this Web site's Park Map show. The boundary goes right through Frank Island in Yellowstone Lake instead of jogging around it.
p.309: Northern Pacific began laying track west from Minnesota in 1870, not 1869 as is stated in the Chronology.
Here are some additions to the Chronology:

2002 AmFac changes its name to Xanterra Parks and Resorts
2003 Delaware North Parks Services replaces Hamilton Stores as the park's general store concessionaire

pp. 351 and 353: AmFac has changed its name to Xanterra.
